Our LitStack Review: Good Girls Don’t Die

Christiana Henry bends genre and tropes in her latest release, placing her characters in the thick of the action and melding their worlds in a heady combination of terror, confusion, and ultimately, resilience.

Celia wakes in a sleepy, small town with no recollection of who she is, and the reader readies themselves for a cozy mystery as the quiet picturesque joy she finds for herself there quickly unravels when she realizes someone is framing her for murder.

They soon find themselves moving into horror as another character as Allie’s birthday getaway is shattered when the secluded cabin trip with her friends is destroyed by their deaths. Finally, Maggie’s story emerges into a YA dystopian world as she is abducted along with another group of women and forced through a booby-trapped maze, with the promise of survival on the other side of the finish line. Maybe.

When the reader finds themselves on the last page, the purpose of the plot and the womens’ purpose in this novel is well defined, and perfectly realized, reminding Henry devotees that she is a champion of a great story and a thriller queen who lays a twist so smart, so unassuming that readers will dig back into the pages looking for clues they’ve missed.

Good Girls Don’t Die blends various genres beautifully, has a strong voice that should be heard, and an underlying message that will resonate with readers across the world.
