Born on this day in 1936, actor, director, and film icon Robert Redford—and in case you missed it, Redford, a well-known storyteller, is also an author. The Outlaw Trail: A Journey Through Time, published in 1981, is an illustrated account of Redford’s 1975 journey on horseback over the Outlaw Trail, a remote route through the mountains, plains, and canyon-lands of Wyoming, Colorado and Utah, and where, from 1870 to 1910, desperados fled to hideouts in remote weather-beaten cabins. Redford’s expedition, financed by National Geographic in 1975, followed the trail’s path from Montana to Mexico, and The Outlaw Trail features Redford’s diary of the trip, along with photographs, history, and lore combined with his legendary advocacy for the preservation of the environment and wild places.
